What
is a domain name?
A domain name is
a unique address that is used on the internet. For example, if you
had a company called YourCo Ltd, you might register the domain name
yourco.com or yourco.ie. This would become the address of your company
on the Internet. You could set up a web site at www.yourco.com. When
you buy your .name, you are buying an Internet address as individual
as you. You'll be able to create your own Web site and use your .name
as an address through which you can have all your e-mail forwarded.
But these services are just the beginning. Your .name could soon become
a single contact point and storage place for personal information
that you can access anywhere, anytime. Note that simply registering
a domain name does not in itself enable you to receive email or operate
a website, rather it stakes a claim to the address should you want
to do so in the future. A domain name is a unique alpha-numeric name
used to identify a particular computer (i.e. web server) on the Internet.

Why
should I register?
Quite simply, to
prevent somebody else registering your name before you do (to protect
your company name).

What
is Domain Parking?
When you register a domain name, you must have it parked on a server.
These are computers connected to the internet which at any time know
where your domain is located. We will park your domain name on our
server and develop an under construction page for you and put it up
on our server also saying that this site belongs to you and is currently
under construction. This is known as domain parking, and is one of
the services offered by Information Providers.
Back
Who
owns the domain?
The domain is registered
in your name (i.e. the name that the customer supplies as the administrative
contact).
Back
What
restrictions are on the name?
All domain names must be less than 67 characters including the top-level
domain, must consist only of alphanumeric but may contain hyphens
as long as they don't occur at the start or end of the name. There
is no difference between capital and lowercase letters.

What
is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?

What
is the difference between .ie and .com?
A .com is more worldwide (global domain) while .ie is like an irish
tag on it basically stating that you are an irish company or you trade
in Ireland or your company has a branch in Ireland. However .ie works
in the same way as .com in that both can be accessed from anywhere
in the world.
